We have been using the Integrated English Language Programme (IELP) developed by CECES in key stage 1 for many years.
In 2010, we successfully applied for the EEG Scheme launched by SCHOLAR.
IELP is implemented at primary three replacing the conventional textbook approach in the 1st term and textbook are used with story books in the 2nd term. It aims to reinforce their English foundation and helps them to proceed to Key Stage 2 . Through the daily routine of big books sharing, singing songs, reading familiar books, introducing new storybooks and the variety of follow-up activities for consolidation, the children can learn English in a more interesting way.
Different classroom activities like role plays, discussions and presentation encourage students’ participation and collaboration. Increased interactions stimulate their application of different generic skills and in turn enrich their English language development.
The highlight of this programme is process writing. The recycle of vocabulary and repetition of sentence structures through different language activities helps reinforce the students’ English knowledge. Through different activities like class writing, group writing and individual writing, the students are able to use the learnt vocabulary and sentence structures in their writings and further develop their writing skills.
Learning centre is newly set up in 2010. It aims to raise students’ learning motivations and nurture students’ self-motivated learning attitude through flexible and diversified learning activities at the Learning Centre. Those activities include the Listening Post, Word Bank and Reading Centre. The diversified language learning activities allow students to improve their learning motivations under a pleasant and relaxing environment.

With a view to improve this programme and maximize the teaching effectiveness, the English panel also arranges different sorts of professional development like workshops, lesson observations, coplanning meetings, and cross-border teaching demonstrations. We hope that our efforts help to stimulate the students’ interest in reading and build up their foundation for English learning in Key Stage 1.
